  • Senior Universities in Portugal characterization, motivation andhealth impact

    Given the growth of the number of senior universities (US or U3A) in Portugal we think it is important to know who frequents these institutions, what are their motivations and the impact it has on their health. Portugal has now, June 2020, 368 US (70% of them were created by associations) with 62.000 students and 7.500 volunteers professors. Of the 368, 296 were registered in RUTIS’s national network. The authors have created a survey that was administered in 1.016 senior students in Portugal. With this study, it was possible to trace the profile of the students who attend Senior Universities. We now know that there are essentially women, aged between 60-75 years and of all social and educational levels. As for the motives, essentially social interaction, getting active and learning, are the top reasons people join. The majority of students has noticed a development in mental and physical health, the increase of their social contacts, improvement of their ICT skills and the reduction of depression cases.

    This book aims to learn about the development and characterization of the education for seniors, in particular the senior universities (U3A) and the possible impact they can have on their regulars. Senior universities are a lifelong education project, involving more than 100 countries, thousands of organizations and teachers and millions of students. The positive influence of these organizations in the lives of seniors is well known. The data reveal an improvement in the perception of students' physical and mental health status; increase in the number of social contacts and consequently decrease in the feeling of loneliness; there was a reduction in the antidepressant medication taken; depression levels are substantially lower than in the general population; the level of knowledge has increased, practically in the digital area, self-esteem has risen, and students feel more active and better inserted in the community. U3A worldwide have nearly two models, French and English, which does not prevent the emergence of hybrid models. In this book, we will address some issues related to ageing and lifelong education or life long learning, as well as making a short history of the emergence of U3A in the world and how they currently organized. In the end, we will discuss in more detail the U3A in Portugal. Through this study, it concludes that the senior universities in Portugal which follow the English model were created essentially by associations, after the year 2000, on average have a paid employee and work mostly in assigned facilities. Senior universities are attended mainly by women, aged 65-75, retired or domestic, married, from all socioeconomic backgrounds and with varying degrees of education. They attend an average of four subjects weekly and go three days a week. Professors are of all ages, mostly with higher education, give 2 hours of classes per week, also represented by retired and active people, are very satisfied with their volunteering at senior universities and the main motivations presented are the joy of teaching and helping others. The Portuguese senior universities are present basically on the entire national territory, are born of civil society, are an example of volunteering and contribute to improving the quality of life of seniors.

    Os professores voluntários são um dos pilares das Universidades Seniores (US) em Portugal, em conjunto com as entidades promotoras e com os alunos seniores. No entanto há pouca literatura sobre esta temática. Neste estudo apresentamos os resultados de um inquérito feito a 575 desses elementos (de uma população de mais de 7.500). Concluímos que os professores são de todas as idades, maioritariamente voluntários e com cursos superiores, dão 2 horas de aulas por semana. Esta população é também representada por reformados e ativos, estão muito satisfeitos com o seu voluntariado e as principais motivações apresentadas são o gosto de ensinar e ajudar o próximo.
  • The democratization of education by the virtual senior university as a promoter of sustainability.

    Aware of this reality, RUTIS, the Network of Senior Universities has sought to promote active aging and its enhancement, with Portuguese Senior Universities aiming to regularly create and boost social, cultural and educational activities. The challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic led to the creation of the Virtual Senior University (USV) by RUTIS allowing seniors to continue their learning at a distance and to share their knowledge. To evaluate the participation and experience of USV students in the activities carried out during the first period of confinement. Quantitative, cross-sectional and correlational study involving 100 USV students, using a demographic questionnaire and the QOSUSV scale. The scale has a good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.806); there is a positive (rho = 0.596) and statistically significant (p <0.01) correlation between satisfaction with USV and the continued participation of its students for the academic year 2020/21. The USV offer is inclusive, transversal and covers the whole country. USV has proven to be a contribution to sustainability in education, particularly in times of confinement and emergency.
  • Os benefícios da practica do Walking Football

    O walking football (futebol a andar) modalidade criada em 2011 na Inglaterra, combina os benefícios da atividade física moderada com aspectos sociais e cognitivos, sendo especialmente atrativa para populações mais velhas. Estudos indicam que participantes regulares apresentam uma melhoria significativa na capacidade cardiovascular, com redução de 15% na frequência cardíaca em repouso após 12 semanas de prática (Arnold et al., 2015). Houve também um aumento de 20% na força muscular em membros inferiores e redução da massa gorda em média de 3 kg. Em termos sociais, o desporto promoveu inclusão, com 86% dos praticantes relatando maior interação social e menos isolamento (MacRae et al., 2020). Do ponto de vista mental, houve reduções no nível de stress e melhorias de até 30% nas escalas de bem-estar foram observadas (Taylor e Pringle, 2021). Além disso, outros estudos destacam como esta modalidade serve como ferramenta inclusiva e de baixo impacto, promovendo autonomia, prevenindo o declínio funcional e aumentando a qualidade de vida geral. Este artigo revisita alguns estudos que evidenciam este impacto positivo desta modalidade na saúde física, mental e social nos praticantes mais velhos.

É necessário contrariar a ideia de que o processo de envelhecimento é marcado pela incapacidade, inutilidade, solidão e isolamento. A aprendizagem ao longo da vida (ALV) pode permitir que esse processo de envelhecimento seja percebido de forma mais positiva, proporcionando a todos, e principalmente às pessoas seniores, possibilidades de uma contínua participação, integração, atividade, autonomia, independência, desenvolvimento e valorização de saberes adquiridos em várias dimensões das suas vidas
