- The impact of student-curated exhibitions about socio-scientific issues on students’ perceptions regarding their competences and the science classesPublication . Reis, Pedro; Tinoca, Luís; Baptista, Mónica; Linhares, ElisabeteThe IRRESISTIBLE Project (FP7, Grant 612367) had the aim of involving teachers, students, and the public in the discussion on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), promoting both the construction of knowledge on cutting-edge (and controversial) research topics and the discussion about the criteria that these research/innovation processes should respect in order to be considered as responsible. These criteria also represent a strong contribution to a more sustainable future for all. This quantitative research evaluates the impact of IRRESISTIBLE’s student-curated exhibitions–about the RRI dimensions of cutting-edge research topics (socio-scientific issues)–on students’ perceptions regarding their scientific competences and the science classes. A pre- and post-test questionnaire was developed, validated, and applied to students from 10 countries. The overall results of the statistical analysis indicate that students improved their perceptions regarding their competences in developing exhibitions in science classes as a way of creating awareness on topics relating to science, technology, and society. This activity reinforced students’ perceptions that in science classes they: (a) discuss current issues and how they impact their lives; (b) develop socially relevant projects; and (c) learn how to influence other citizens’ decisions about social issues related to science, technology, and the environment with the aim of assuring a more sustainable future.
- Combined effect of interventions with pure or enriched mixtures of (poly)phenols and anti-diabetic medication in type 2 diabetes management: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled human trials: reviewPublication . Raimundo, Ana F.; Félix, F.; Andrade, R.; García‑Conesa, M.T.; González‑Sarrías, A.; Gilsa‑Lopes, J.; Ó, D. do; Raimundo, A.; Ribeiro, R.; Rodiguez-Mateos, A.; Santos, C.N.; Schär, M.; Silva, A.; Cruz, I.; Wang, B.; Pinto, Paula; Menezes, R.Purpose: (Poly)phenols have been reported to confer protective effects against type 2 diabetes but the precise association remains elusive. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of (poly)phenol intake on well-established biomarkers in people with type 2 diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using the following selection criteria: (1) human randomized controlled trials involving individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes; (2) one or more of the following biomarkers: glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, pro-insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP)/amylin, pro-IAPP/pro-amylin, glucagon, C-peptide; (3) chronic intervention with pure or enriched mixtures of (poly)phenols. From 488 references, 88 were assessed for eligibility; data were extracted from 27 studies and 20 were used for meta-analysis. The groups included in the meta-analysis were: (poly)phenol mixtures, isoflavones, flavanols, anthocyanins and resveratrol. Results: Estimated intervention/control mean differences evidenced that, overall, the consumption of (poly)phenols contributed to reduced fasting glucose levels (- 3.32 mg/dL; 95% CI - 5.86, - 0.77; P = 0.011). Hb1Ac was only slightly reduced (- 0.24%; 95% CI - 0.43, - 0.044; P = 0.016) whereas the levels of insulin and HOMA-IR were not altered. Subgroup comparative analyses indicated a stronger effect on blood glucose in individuals with diabetes (- 5.86 mg/dL, 95% CI - 11.34, - 0.39; P = 0.036) and this effect was even stronger in individuals taking anti-diabetic medication (- 10.17 mg/dL, 95% CI - 16.59, - 3.75; P = 0.002). Conclusions: Our results support that the consumption of (poly)phenols may contribute to lower glucose levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes or at risk of diabetes and that these compounds may also act in combination with anti-diabetic drugs.
- Youth's education for social entrepreneurship:outcomes and pitfalls of an applied projectPublication . Cordeiro, Cláudia; Oliveira, PedroNowadays the European Union’s social policy, in overall, advocates that society must lead efforts to overtake its problems by self-regulation. In coherence with such perspective, our research analyses the impact of a pioneer educational project aiming to create social value through the governance mentoring. Empowering citizens implies a priori to develop educational resources, boosting competences related to management and demystifying some pre-assumed myths about social economy.
- Analysis of emerging technologies for improving social inclusion of people with disabilitiesPublication . Barbas, Maria Potes; Babic, J.; Car, Z.; Gace, I.; Lovrek, I.; Topolovac, I.; Vdovic, H.; Zilak, M.; Gourves, A.Technologies in general and their assistive capabilities in particular, play a significant role for people with disabilities and their social inclusion. It is expected that emerging technologies will contribute to assistive technologies by reducing or removing the constraints that characterize existing solutions, as well as opening up entirely new ones [1]–[6]. This report aims to explore such opportunities by investigating the potential of emerging technologies for the sake of improving social inclusion of people with disabilities. The presented research is carried out within the ERASMUS+ project entitled Innovative Solutions based on Emerging Technologies for Improving Social Inclusion of People with Disabilities (INNOSID). The INNOSID project is based on the 10-year-long operation of the ICT-AAC Competence network in Croatia1 whose members cooperate in education, research, development and innovation with the aim of developing an inclusive society. The ICT-AAC Competence network’s activities are expanded with this project through the internationalization and use of emerging technologies. The project’s consortium consists of six higher education institutions and one non-governmental organization from the domain of persons with disabilities from five European countries: Croatia, France, Hungary, Portugal and Spain. More about the INNOSID consortium partners can be found in the Appendix A of the report. The report, in whose activities all INNOSID partner countries participated, provides an analysis of emerging technologies for improving social inclusion of people with disabilities. The focus of this chapter is to introduce the topics of interest by explaining the key theoretical concepts from both technical and societal aspects. Keywords, such as people with disabilities, social inclusion and emerging technologies, are defined and introduced from a broader perspective in order to understand the connection between them. In addition, the end of this chapter will outline its significance for interested readers. As the reader of the report will be able to see, the report is designed to provide, in addition to text, numerous examples related to different statistics, infographics, various visual representations of the described, as well as examples of good practice and case studies, mostly related to partner countries. Purpose of that is to enable the reader to better understand the topics that are extremely important and should not be neglected, especially because they concern each person and because each of us can play an important role in change for the better.

- Portuguese Equidae native breeds: main characteristics, census and demographic parametersPublication . Vicente, António; Carolino, Nuno; Fradinho, M.J.The aim of this study was to summarise the main characteristics of the Portuguese Equidae native breeds. Portugal is a small country from the southwest of Europe with 50 recognised domestic native breeds. Among them there are 6 Equidae breeds, 4 equine (Lusitano, Sorraia, Garrano and Terceira pony) and 2 donkey populations (Miranda and Graciosa). In this review we present an overall census of each population, average body weight, height at withers, skills and uses, dynamics in the studbook and some demographic parameters such as known generations, generation interval and inbreeding. Lusitano horse is the main equine breed, with a close studbook and small census of 3,623 breeding females (half outside Portugal), spread around the globe with more than 30 countries breeding it. The Garrano pony is a small horse from the northwest, with a close studbook, with 1,994 breeding females, 162 stallions, and 435 breeders. Sorraia horse is a primitive southern European breed regarded as an universal genetic resource, very resistant and versatile, managed as a close population since 1937 with only 18 breeders, ~150 breeding females and a total of ~350 animals worldwide. Terceira Pony, from Azores, with an open studbook, was the last to be recognised (2014), with a total of ~100 animals descending from 14 founders. The Miranda donkey from the northeast is a long bay coat animal, with a calm temperament suited for agriculture, milk production and leisure, with a total of 756 females, 60 stallions and 460 breeders. The Graciosa donkey, from Azores, is the most recently recognised donkey breed (2015). With a very small size, a scarce census of 92 dams, of which only 22 are in production, 13 stallions and 63 breeders, are bred for conservation, tourism and milk production. Beside the opportunities for research and conservation programs, all these breeds represent important socio-economic and ecological values, that will enhance the sustainability of Mediterranean production systems.
