- Combined effect of interventions with pure or enriched mixtures of (poly)phenols and anti-diabetic medication in type 2 diabetes management: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled human trials: reviewPublication . Raimundo, Ana F.; Félix, F.; Andrade, R.; García‑Conesa, M.T.; González‑Sarrías, A.; Gilsa‑Lopes, J.; Ó, D. do; Raimundo, A.; Ribeiro, R.; Rodiguez-Mateos, A.; Santos, C.N.; Schär, M.; Silva, A.; Cruz, I.; Wang, B.; Pinto, Paula; Menezes, R.Purpose: (Poly)phenols have been reported to confer protective effects against type 2 diabetes but the precise association remains elusive. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effects of (poly)phenol intake on well-established biomarkers in people with type 2 diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using the following selection criteria: (1) human randomized controlled trials involving individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes; (2) one or more of the following biomarkers: glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, pro-insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP)/amylin, pro-IAPP/pro-amylin, glucagon, C-peptide; (3) chronic intervention with pure or enriched mixtures of (poly)phenols. From 488 references, 88 were assessed for eligibility; data were extracted from 27 studies and 20 were used for meta-analysis. The groups included in the meta-analysis were: (poly)phenol mixtures, isoflavones, flavanols, anthocyanins and resveratrol. Results: Estimated intervention/control mean differences evidenced that, overall, the consumption of (poly)phenols contributed to reduced fasting glucose levels (- 3.32 mg/dL; 95% CI - 5.86, - 0.77; P = 0.011). Hb1Ac was only slightly reduced (- 0.24%; 95% CI - 0.43, - 0.044; P = 0.016) whereas the levels of insulin and HOMA-IR were not altered. Subgroup comparative analyses indicated a stronger effect on blood glucose in individuals with diabetes (- 5.86 mg/dL, 95% CI - 11.34, - 0.39; P = 0.036) and this effect was even stronger in individuals taking anti-diabetic medication (- 10.17 mg/dL, 95% CI - 16.59, - 3.75; P = 0.002). Conclusions: Our results support that the consumption of (poly)phenols may contribute to lower glucose levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes or at risk of diabetes and that these compounds may also act in combination with anti-diabetic drugs.

- Effects of sports participation and the perceived value of elite sport on subjective well-beingPublication . Silva, A.; Monteiro, Diogo; Sobreiro, PedroThis study contributes with new acknowledgment to the literature focussed on the role of sports on subjective well-being. Distinct from the existent literature, this body of work suggests a model aiming at the following: 1) exhibit the relationship between sports participation – weekly frequency and minutes of practice – and individual’s subjective well-being; and 2) determine the extent to which perceived value of elite sports impacts individual’s subjective well-being. Data was collected from 511 respondents. SEM was used to analyze the variables that were measured in accordance to previous studies. Findings showed that: 1) sports participation positively affected individual’s subjective well-being; and 2) perceived value of elite sports positively affected individual’s subjective well-being; These results have key managerial implications for sports policymakers, as well as for managers responsible for physical activity and sports development programmes.
- Fans identification: the bright side of football sponsorship effectivenessPublication . Silva, A.Football events are by far one of the most preferred leisure activities amongst fans around the world, namely when it involves their favorite team. The measurement of sponsorship results is seen as a research priority, however, some results found are not consistent, in which mediation is seen as a research priority. This research intends to: i) determine fan identification effect on perceived congruency between sponsor and sponsored team, and on intentions towards buying sponsor’s products, and; ii) determine the mediation role of perceived congruence. In total, 1,399 fans from a top three Portuguese professional football team were considered for analysis. For statistical analysis, Structural Equation Modeling was used. Results show that higher levels of fans’ team identification lead to higher intention to buy sponsor’s products, and the most innovative result was the relevant mediating role of the perceived congruence in the formation of the purchase intention on sponsor’s products.
- Financiamento do desporto: crowdfundingPublication .
- Financiamento do desporto: mecenato desportivoPublication .
- Force production and spatial arm coordination profile in arm crawl swimming in a fixed positionPublication . Karsai, István; Garrido, N.; Louro, Hugo; Leitão, L.; Magyar, F.; Alves, F.; Silva, A.This study analyzed the relationship between mechanical force production and spatial arm position of the swimming movement for each side of the swimmer. Eight internationally recognized male swimmers performed fix positioned arm only swimming with a dynamometer synchronized with underwater cameras. The upper arm positions (α in side, β in frontal view) and the elbow angles (γ in 3D) were determined at the moment where the force production reached the peak (Fmax) and the maximal values of rate of force development (RFDmax). RFDmax and α values showed significant differences between the sides (P<0.05). To show the motion integration structure of the performance, Multiple Regression Analysis (MRA) was employed separately for both sides. For the criterion variable, the impulse of force (ImpF50%) was calculated. The defined parameters as the mechanical and spatial predictor system were used for the model. The results of the MRA showed that the predictor system yielded the model structure of the variables that explain the criterion variables for ImpF50% by the dominant (P=0.007) and by the nondominant side (P=0.001), respectively. The alternate contribution of the variables to the models can objectively express the performance difference between the two sides of the swimmer.
- From fans to buyers: antecedents of sponsor's products purchase intentionPublication . Silva, A.; Verissimo, Jose Manuel CristovaoPurpose – This study aims to explore the indirect and direct effect of perceived congruence between fans’ identification with a team and the intention to buy sponsor’s products. The level of perceived congruence between the sponsor and the sports team, as well as fans’ attitude toward the sponsor and their purchase intention toward products from the sponsoring company are analyzed. Design/methodology/approach – A sample of 2,647 football fans who support two well-known Portuguese professional football teams completed a questionnaire. Structural equation modeling with multigroup analysis was carried out to test the model and the hypotheses. Findings – Team identification has an effect on perceived congruence, on attitude toward sponsors and on intention to buy. The results also show the positive direct and indirect effects of both perceived congruence on attitude toward the sponsoring company and on purchase intention of sponsors’ products. However, neither congruence nor attitude show significant results on purchase intention. Originality/value – This study departs from previous studies, in that it investigates the direct and indirect (i.e. mediated) effects of perceived congruence. Firstly, it analyzes the mediating effect of perceived congruence between team identification and purchase intentions. Secondly, it explores the mediating effect of perceived congruence between team identification and attitude toward the sponsor.
