Mercê, Cristiana; Cordeiro, Jéssica; Romão, Catarina; Branco, Marco A. C.; Catela, DavidThe Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) affects about 5 to 6% of school-aged children, being one of the most common developmental problems in childhood. A dated review identified that DCD children had lower levels of physical activity than their peers however, they did not investigate the implications of this lower activity in the children's lives. The present systematic review aimed to identify: i) differences in physical activity levels between children with developmental coordination disorder (pDCD) and typical development, ii) the repercussions of these differences, and iii) main instruments used in the measurement of physical activity. A comprehensive search in five databases was performed (Science Direct, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Cochrane), including grey literature. After finding 785 publications, 16 studies were included. This review verified that pDCD children have lower levels of moderate and vigorous physical activity, with possible implications at physical (e.g., higher percentages of fat mass) and psychological (e.g., increased levels of frustration) levels. This review confirms that children with pDCD are less active than children with typical development and have a higher risk of developing cardio-metabolic diseases. Parents, teachers, schools and communities should create motivational environments for youngsters with DCD to engage and maintain physical activity as they move into adulthood.
- The impact of geopolitical risk on portuguese exportsPublication . Leitão, Nuno CarlosThis investigation evaluates the performance of Portuguese exports by focusing on the 11 main partners for 1990–2021, considering panel data. Country risk analysis has been frequently used to assess the determinants of international trade in recent years. Empirical studies demonstrate that country risk can affect bilateral relationships between economies, especially in economies with greater geopolitical risk. Next, we refer to the methodology used in this research. In this context, we assessed the stationarity of the variables used in this study. Subsequently, models were used to eliminate bias and endogeneity between the variables. The panel quantile regression model allows us to understand the behaviour of variables across different quartiles. The empirical study shows that countries with low country risk promote the performance of Portuguese exports. On the other hand, the size of the economies, both the exporting country (Portugal) and the importing countries (commercial partners), is decisive for increasing Portuguese exports. This finding can be explained as a monopolistic competition with the economy’s scale and industrial concentration serving as theoretical support. As noted with previous studies on the gravity model, the common language of Portuguese-speaking countries reduces communication costs and increases Portuguese exports. Furthermore, the econometric model also validates the issue of geographical distance, where this variable has a negative impact on exports, demonstrating that geographical proximity reduces transport costs.
- Effects of a combined training program on pain, stiffness, fatigue, and well-being in women with fibromyalgiaPublication . Sousa, Mónica; MOUTÃO, JOÃO; Oliveira, Rafael; Alves, SusanaFibromyalgia is a rheumatic disease characterized by chronic widespread muscle pain and its treatment is carried out through pharmacological interventions. Physical exercise and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle influence the reduction of the symptoms of the disease. The main objective of this study was to analyze the effects of a combined training program on health and functional capacity in female individuals diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. It was a quasi-experimental study with a duration of 8 months with a sample of six participants between 43 and 58 years old, who did not practice any type of physical exercise program. The following instruments were used in baseline and post intervention: Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Short Form Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36v2) and functional physical fitness tests (30-second chair stand, arm curl, sit and reach, 8-ft up-and-go, back scratch and 2-minute step test. Wilcoxon non-parametric test (intra-group comparison) was used, with a significance level of p<0.05 to compare baseline and post intervention effects. Significant improvements were observed: in 2-minute step test (p=0.21); physical function; physical performance; physical pain and general health, the mental component, vitality; social function of the SF-36v2 (all, p<0.05). Moreover, FIQ showed a significant reduction in all scales at the end of the program compared to the baseline (p<0.05). Combined training program can reduce the impact of fibromyalgia while improving health and aerobic performance.
- Comparison of Semi-structured Data on MSSQL and PostgreSQLPublication . Alves, Leandro; Cardoso, Filipe; Oliveira, Pedro; Rocha, Júlio; Wanzeller, Cristina; Martins, Pedro; Abbasi, MaryamThe present study intends to compare the performance of two Data Base Management Systems, specifically Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL, focusing on data insertion, queries execution, and indexation. To simulate how Microsoft SQL Server performs with key-value oriented datasets we use a converted TPC-H lineitem table. The data set is explored in two different ways, firsts using the key-value-like format and second in JSON format. The same dataset is applied to PostgreSQL DBMS to analyse performance and compare both database engines. After testing the load process on both databases, performance metrics (execution times) are obtained and compared. Experimental results show that, in general, inserts are approximately twice times faster in Microsoft SQL Server because they are injected as plain text without any type of verification, while in PostgreSQL, loaded data includes a validating process, which delays the loading process. Moreover, we did additional indexation tests, from which we concluded that in general, data loading performance degrades. Regarding query performance in PostgreSQL, we conclude that with indexation, queries become three or four percent faster, and six times faster in Microsoft SQL Server.
- Intra- and inter-individual variability in the underwater pull-out technique in 200 m breaststroke turnsPublication . Gonjo, Tomohiro; Olstad, Bjørn; Stastny, Jan; Conceição, Ana; Seifert, LudovicThe purpose of the present study was to investigate the intra- and inter-individual variability in arm-leg coordination during the underwater phase of the turn segment in 200 m breaststroke. Thirteen male swimmers were recruited and performed a 200 m breaststroke in a pre-calibrated 25 m pool. Sub-phases during the underwater segment were obtained using a notational analysis, and the mean velocity, displacement and duration during each sub-phase were obtained. A hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was performed using the analyzed variables in all phases to identify inter-individual variability and random intra-individual variability. In addition, a linear mixed model (LMM: lap as a fixed effect and the participant as a random effect) was conducted to investigate systematic intra-individual variability. HCA identified three coordination patterns that were distinguished by the timing of the dolphin kick relative to the arm pull-out and the duration of the glide with arms at the side. All swimmers except one performed the arm pull-out after the dolphin kick. Nine swimmers maintained one coordination pattern, but other swimmers switched their coordination during the trial, particularly by shortening the duration of the glide with arms at the side. LMM showed a linear decrease (from the first to the last turn) in the time gap between the end of the dolphin kick and the start of the arm pull-out (a glide with the streamlined body position; F = 9.64, p = 0.034) and the glide duration with the arms at the side (F = 11.66, p = 0.015). In conclusion, both inter- and intra-individual variabilities during the underwater phase were evident in 200 m breaststroke turns, which were categorized into three patterns based on the timing of the dolphin kick and the duration of glides.
- Analysis of cervical node metastasis in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma patients retrospective study and literature comparisonPublication . Silva, Leonor Cruz; Coutinho, José Cunha; São João, Ricardo; Domingues, Tiago Dias; Coutinho, Gonçalo Cunha; Caldas, Cecília; Palmela, Paulo; Nobre, Miguel; Salvado, FranciscoBackground/Objective: Oral Cavity Cancer is a frequent type of Head and Neck Cancer, associated with high mortality rates worldwide. One of the main prognostic factors for the disease is regional lymph node metastasis that is associated with survival rate reduction by 50%. Reported tumour sites more frequently associated with regional node metastasis vary throughout literature. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a retrospective study that would allow us to identify the relationship between patient and SCC tumour factors with the rate of neck metastasis and compare our data with the conclusions from similar studies. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in the Oral Medicine and Oncology Consultation of the Stomatology Department from Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte, comprehending patients diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma between January 2015 and April 2021. As eligibility criteria we considered patients which had clinical charts with complete information including sociodemographic variables, tumour site and disease staging at diagnosis. We excluded tumour sites with only two diagnosed cases, considering bias risk. Three groups were defined according to a clinical/pathological reason. The current research was approved by an independent ethics committee. Results: The sample includes 151 cases, the majority of which were males (≈59%) and with average age at diagnosis (± standard deviation) of 65 ± 13 years-old. Oral tumour sites with highest percentage of cases with clinical positive lymph nodes (cN+) by the time of diagnosis were inferior gingiva (72.7%, n=16), mouth floor (66.7%, n=22), oropharynx (64.7%, n=11), retromolar trigone (58%, n=11) and ventral tongue (57%, n=16). Sites with fewer cases of cN+ were inferior lip (31%, n=4) and superior lip (n=0). Similar results were found in our sample when operated tumors (pN+) were considered: floor of the mouth (65%, n=13), retromolar trigone (63.6%, n=7), inferior gingiva (46.2%, n=6) and ventral tongue (45%, n=9). Tumour sites with fewer pN+ cases were hard palate (25%, n=1), superior gingiva (16.7%, n=1) and inferior lip (0 out of 7 cases). According to Fisher’s exact test there is no statistically significant association (p-value=0.1506) between primary tumour site and cervical node disease (either cN+ or, whenever available, pN+). Conclusions: Our data seem to indicate an association between primary tumour site and N+, being cervical metastasis more frequent when tumour site was posterior and caudally located. Lower lip had the fewer positive lymph nodes, probably correlated with the inclusion in the same group of oral mucosa and skin cancers. Despite these findings, the association was not statistically significant.
- Effects of exercise on quality of life in subjects with Alzheimer’s disease: systematic review with meta-analysis of randomized clinical trialsPublication . Mendes, Mariana; Correia, Érica; Vitorino, Anabela; Rodrigues, José; Cid, Luis; Bento, Teresa; Antunes, Raul; Monteiro, Diogo; Couto, NunoAlzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that progressively affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It can interfere with daily activities and lead to a decline in cognitive abilities over time. Exercise-based interventions can complement Alzheimer’s disease treatment. Exercise is a valuable tool in all healthcare settings and has shown promise as an effective cognitive improvement intervention for people with cognitive impairments. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze the effect of physical exercise on the QoL of subjects with Alzheimer’s disease. A search was performed with the help of the electronic databases PubMed and Web of Science. Randomized controlled trials with exercise-based interventions were selected. Four studies met the inclusion criteria, which included interventions based on exercise. The effects were summarized using standardized mean differences (95% confidence intervals) using random-effect models. The results showed that exercise had no significant effect on the QoL of subjects with Alzheimer. Thus, the effect of exercise interventions on the QoL of patients with Alzheimer’s disease is not conclusive. More research is needed about this topic and the way in which the QoL is assessed; the necessity to conduct an objective way to assess the QoL in this population is mandatory.
