- Assessing the management of excessive daytime sleepiness by napping benefitsPublication . Murillo-Rodríguez, Eric; Yamamoto, Tetsuya; Monteiro, Diogo; Budde, Henning; Rocha, Nuno Barbosa; Cid, Luis; Teixeira, Diogo S.; Telles-Correia, Diogo; Veras, André Barciela; Machado, Sérgio; Imperatori, Claudio; Torterolo, PabloPurpose Demanding lifestyle characterized by extended working hours, shift work schedules as well as excessive use of mobile gadgets leads to the disruption of the circadian and homeostatic factors affecting the sleep quality of individuals. As consequence, subjects complain of suffering several sleep disorders some of them characterized by inducing excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Currently, the therapeutic approaches for managing EDS include medication, promotion of sleep hygiene, cognitive and behavioral therapy or using of continuous positive airway pressure machine. In this review, we propose the posology of the personalized sleep medicine by the prescription of naps for treating EDS. Methods This review included the online search in PubMed and manual review of articles (basic and clinical trials) of a range of personalized medicine potentially associated to factors of dosage in areas such as nutrition, sports and sleep. Articles in English were identified and subsequently analyzed for consideration for this review. Results Current evidence has demonstrated that naps exert positive outcomes for individuals complaining with EDS. The dosage of naps might follow similar procedures as reported for personalized interventions in diets or exercise programs (by taking the right dose, at the proper time, with a recommended frequency) which have demonstrated successfully results. Conclusions The management of EDS may include the personalized sleep medicine considering the prescription of dosage of naps.
- Behavioral Regulation Sport Questionnaire: Gender and Sport Invariance in Portuguese AthletesPublication . Monteiro, Diogo; Teixeira, Diogo; Vitorino, Anabela; Moutão, João; Rodrigues, Filipe; Machado, Sérgio; Cid, LuisThis study aimed to analyze measurement invariance of the Behavioral Regulation Sports Questionnaire (BRSQ) across the gender and four different sports. In addition, we examined nomological validity via basic psychological needs satisfaction. Participants totaled 1,812 Portuguese athletes (1,220 males and 592 females; aged 15–59 years, Mage ¼ 17.72, SD ¼ 5.51) from football (n ¼ 596), basketball (n ¼ 273), swimming (n ¼ 800), and parasport (n ¼ 143). The BRSQ measurement model was invariant across the gender and these four sports. The scale confirmed nomological validity in that satisfaction of the basic psychological needs positively predicted autonomous forms of motivation and negatively predicted more controlled motivation and amotivation as suggested by self-determination theory. In light of this evidence for BRSQ construct validity, composite reliability, nomological validity, and invariance across the gender and four different sports, this scale is a useful tool for the coaches of the aforementioned sports in their efforts to evaluate their athletes’ motivation.
- Blueberry intake included in hypocaloric diet decreases weight, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and adenosine levels in obese subjectsPublication . Higuera-Hernández, María Fernanda; Reyes-Cuapio, Elena; Gutiérrez-Mendoza, Marissa; Budde, Henning; Blanco-Centurión, Carlos; Veras, André Barciela; Rocha, Nuno Barbosa; Yamamoto, Tetsuya; Monteiro, Diogo; Zaldívar-Rae, Jaime; Aldana-Aranda, Dalila; Machado, Sérgio; Murillo-Rodríguez, EricObesity is a disease characterized by an excessive accumulation of fat in the body and it has been linked the enhancement of inflammation-related endogenous molecules, such as adenosine (AD). Since blueberries may induce anti-obesity effects, we tested the hypothesis that blueberries consumption contained in hypocaloric diet would decrease weight, BMI as well as glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and AD levels in obese subjects. The baseline conditions of obesity-related variables were collected for all subjects prior the implementation of blueberries intake. Later, participants received a hypocaloric diet that included the consumption of blueberries (50 g/day) during 30 days. We found that male obese subjects that consumed blueberries showed a decrease in weight, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and AD whereas female obese subjects that ate blueberries in hypocaloric diet showed no differences in weight, BMI, glucose and triglycerides but displayed a diminution in cholesterol and AD levels. Data suggest that intake of blueberries seems to decrease some of the obese-linked parameters in male or female subjects. Importantly, blueberry consumption decreased the inflammation-related compound AD in both sexes
- Did You Enjoy It? The Role of Intensity-Trait Preference/Tolerance in Basic Psychological Needs and Exercise EnjoymentPublication . Teixeira, Diogo S.; Rodrigues, Filipe; Machado, Sérgio; Cid, Luis; Monteiro, DiogoPromoting exercise regimens that aim at enhancing the quality of individuals’ subjective exercise experience can be challenging. Given the recent theoretical contributions regarding the possible interaction of exercise intensity-traits and several motivational variables, as well as their potential value for exercise adherence, the objective of this study was to examine the mediation role of basic psychological needs in the relationship between preference for and tolerance of exercise intensity and enjoyment. This cross-sectional study comprised a total of 160 exercisers (Mage = 34.12, SD = 9.23, 73 males) enrolled in several health clubs. All analyses were performed using SPSS v. 23.0/PROCESS v. 3.4. The results indicate that intensity-traits presented positive associations with enjoyment, and negative associations with all of needs frustration variables. A mediation role of needs frustration emerged in the intensity traits and enjoyment associations that was analyzed according to relatable theoretical considerations.
- E - Sports: a legitimate sport?Publication . Cerqueira, Matheus; Monteiro, Diogo; Travassos, Bruno; Machado, SérgioCurrently, our society is facing an increase in the levels of physical inactivity in the world population, especially an increase in screen time, causing potential adverse effects in the short and long term to health (Stiglic & Viner, 2019; Domingues‐Montanari, 2017). Several institutions, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), recognize the importance of physical exercise as a potential tool against the risks associated with sedentary behavior (Piercy et al., 2018). And within that context, a question must be asked; can screen time be considered time spent on sports?(…)
- Effects of dual-task interventions on gait performance of patients with parkinson’s disease: a systematic reviewPublication . Santos, Luís A. A.; Campos, Carlos; Bento, Teresa; Lattari, Eduardo; Nardi, Antônio Egidio; Rocha, Nuno Barbosa F.; Machado, SérgioOBJECTIVE: Parkinson’s disease is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms that impair patients’ gait performance, especially while performing dual/concurrent tasks. These deficits impair patients’ daily function, because dual-tasking is a crucial ability in terms of everyday living. The aim of this study was to systematically review the effects of dual task interventions on gait performance of patients with Parkinson’s disease. METHOD: Studies were retrieved from MEDLINE/PubMed, LILACS and SciELO. We used the PICOS strategy to determine eligibility criteria. The search strategy included an advanced search on the included databases, using the following search query: “Parkinson’s Disease” AND “Double Task” OR “Concurrent Tasks” OR “Gait” AND “Walk”. Study selection was carried out by two independent researchers and a third one was called when consensus was needed. RESULTS: A total of 188 articles were identified: 169 articles from Medline/PubMed, 10 articles in SciELO, 8 articles in LILACS and 1 item from manual searches. A total of 56 articles were analyzed regarding the eligibility and exclusion criteria based on full text. A final total of 7 studies were included in the systematic review. CONCLUSION: The different types of dual-task interventions reported (dance, sound stimuli, visual and somatosensory) were associated to improvements in several gait performance indicators of Parkinson’s disease patients, including gait speed, stride time and length, cadence and step length. External stimuli seem to play a critical role on specific training effects on dual-task gait performance.

- Impact of aerobic exercise on anxiety and neurobiological mechanisms in panic disorder: a mini-reviewPublication . Machado, Sérgio; Lima, João Lucas; Teixeira, Diogo Santos; Monteiro, Diogo; Cid, Luis; Neto, Sílvio; Maranhão, Geraldo Neto; Murillo-Rodriguez, Eric; Telles-Correia, DiogoIn the last few decades exercise has been explored as a potential tool to reduce symptoms experienced by patients with panic disorder (PD). This review aims to present the effects of exercise interventions on panic severity, and anxiety symptoms of patients with PD. A literature search was conducted using PubMeb and ISI Web of Science databases, with the search terms panic disorder and aerobic exercise, exercise therapy, physical fitness, physical activity, aerobic training. Acute studies suggest that exercise immediately increases panic-related symptoms, but allows the reduction of artificially induced increase panic attacks and anxiety. There is still no clear evidence indicating that regular exercise programs reduce panic-related symptoms, but it seems that this intervention is effective to improve global anxiety measures. In addition, exercise seems to induce neurobiological effects that influence on several neural mechanisms related to anxiety disorders, such as increase of monoamine levels and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).Both aerobic exercise and regular aerobic exercise seem to be an appropriate intervention to promote improvements in the severity of anxiety symptoms in PD patients. It is suggested a greater control in the prescription of aerobic exercise, to bring promising answers regarding the efficacy of exercise on symptoms in patients with PD.
