Segundo o Pordata, Estatísticas de Portugal e Europa, cerca de 27 mil pessoas morreram por
tumores malignos no último ano, sendo uma das principais causas de morte a nível mundial. Em
grande parte dos estudos efetuados nos últimos anos é afirmado que uma das causas de cancro
pode ser o excesso de peso e a desnutrição. A Dieta Mediterrânea (DM) é um padrão alimentar
tradicional rico em nutrientes, vitaminas, antioxidantes e equilibrado com uma fonte de gordura
insaturada e um consumo reduzido de carnes vermelhas. Este estilo de vida pode reduzir o risco
de doenças cardíacas, diabetes, cancro e promover uma vida mais saudável. O presente trabalho
é uma revisão narrativa de estudos efetuados nos últimos cinco anos, com o objetivo de evidenciar
a influência que a dieta mediterrânea tem em pacientes diagnosticados com cancro. A pesquisa foi
efetuada no mês de março de 2023, na base de dados Pubmed, utilizando as palavras chave:
“(“Mediterranean diet”(Title)) AND (cancer (Title)), tendo-se obtido 83 artigos. Foram excluídos
artigos de revisão comentários, artigos de opinião, e artigos que não abordavam a dieta
mediterrânica ou cancro, ficando 19 artigos para análise. Os artigos analisados incluíram estudos
da influência da DM nos cancros de: mama (6), próstata (4), bexiga (2), tiróide (2), cólon (2),
estômago e esófago (3). O cancro da mama parece ser mais comum em mulheres com excesso de
peso e pós-menopausa. A adesão à DM diminui os níveis de adiposidade e o IMC, o que leva a que
haja um menor risco de aparecimento do cancro da mama. No que respeita aos restantes cancros,
de um modo geral, quanto maior a adesão à DM, menor o risco de desenvolvimento do cancro. Em
alguns casos de doença instalada, os sintomas são mais suaves e a progressão da doença é mais
lenta em pacientes com maior adesão à DM.
According to Pordata, Statistics of Portugal and Europe, approximately 27 thousand people died from malignant tumors in the last year, being one of the main causes of death worldwide. In many studies conducted in recent years, it has been stated that one of the causes of cancer can be excess weight and malnutrition. The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is a traditional dietary pattern rich in nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, and balanced with a source of unsaturated fat and reduced consumption of red meats. This lifestyle can reduce the risk of heart diseases, diabetes, cancer, and promote a healthier life. The present work is a narrative review of studies conducted in the last five years, aiming to highlight the influence that the Mediterranean diet has on patients diagnosed with cancer. The research was carried out in March 2023, using the Pubmed database, with the keywords: "(Mediterranean diet" (Title)) AND (cancer (Title)), resulting in 83 articles. Review articles, comments, opinion pieces, and articles that did not address the Mediterranean diet or cancer were excluded, leaving 19 articles for analysis. The analyzed articles included studies on the influence of MD on the following cancers: breast (6), prostate (4), bladder (2), thyroid (2), colon (2), stomach and esophagus (3). Breast cancer seems to be more common in overweight and post-menopausal women. Adherence to the MD reduces adiposity and BMI, resulting in a lower risk of breast cancer. Regarding other cancers, in general, the higher the adherence to the MD, the lower the risk of cancer development. In some cases of established disease, symptoms are milder, and disease progression is slower in patients with higher adherence to the MD.
