- Senior universities in Portugal:exploratory study for the approach of positive organisationsPublication . Jacob, Luis; Galinha, Sónia Maria Gomes Alexandre; São João, RicardoThe Association Network of Seniors Universities in Portugal (RUTIS) is a non-formal lifelong education project represented in the Economic and Social Council (CES) and involves more than 65,000 seniors, 368 organisations and 7,500 volunteer teachers. It is presumably the country in the world with proportionally the largest number of senior learners (Jacob, 2020). In this exploratory quantitative research through a questionnaire survey addressed to a sample of 1,016 individuals, the main goal is to get to know the Senior Universities as a positive organisation. The secondary goals were considered: i) to characterize the students in the sociodemographic component ii) to assess the reasons for attending university, iii) to know the importance assigned to university and iv) to assess the benefits perceived by students in this context. The results show that: i) the majority of students are female (71.85%), aged between 65-74 years (57.1%), married (65.26%), with a low level of education (47.74%) and the most representative income level is 41.54% (n=422), in the range of 401-1000€. There is a moderate positive correlation (ρ=0.62) and statistically significant (p-value=0) between the monthly income and the level of education of older students. ii) The possibility of remaining active, acquiring new knowledge, socializing and keeping busy are the main reasons given for enrolling/attending the US. iii) As for the importance assigned, the data point to: staying active, socializing and learning. iv) The perceived benefits are to continue having an active life, having more knowledge and improving mental health. The study data are relevant from the perspective of Martin Seligman's positive organizations (Seligman, Steen, Park, & Peterson, 2005; Galinha, 2020).
- Analysis of Motor Behavior based on Recurrence Analysis in Adults with Autism Spectrum and Neurotypicals in a Dynamic Balance Task: a pilot studyPublication . Altenburg, M.; Farinha, C.; Santos, C.; Mercê, Cristiana; Catela, David; Branco, Marco A. C.Introduction: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) refers to a range of neurodevelopmental disorders with deficits in postural control (PC), motor development and coordination. The PC deficit appears to be persistent across the spectrum and can limit the acquisition of new motor skills with severe consequences in life’s’ quality. Objectives: i) to verify if the nonlinear techniques can identify the local recurrence pattern in the phase space of the PC, in individuals with ASD, ii) to compare the PC between ASD and neurotypical individuals, during a task of dynamic rotation balance. Methods: six male adult individuals, three autistic and three neurotypicals, performed a dynamic balance task, where angular velocity data was collected from the trunk. Results: Despite the inexistence of significant differences, autistic adults revealed, for all planes of movement, higher mean values of recurrence, periodicity, stability (except for the maximum line in the transversal plane), complexity and intermittence; differences that were visually confirmed by observing the recurrence graphs. Autistic participants also revealing lower mean values of Lyapunov exponent, meaning less divergency and variability than the neurotypicals. Conclusions: the autistic’s postural control strategy of a greater periodicity, stability and a lower divergence and variability, may result from less plasticity in the ability to adjust to momentary states of postural imbalance. This strategy could be linked to the autistic’s stereotypical behavior of continuously cyclical movements. However, this does not result in greater variability in movement, but less variability. Given the neuro-motor difficulty of these autistic adults in producing varied ranges of motion, it is recommended to introduce dynamic balance activities, starting with reduced levels of postural stability disturbance.
- Agrio et Emulsio – Development of fruity mustard creams with beets and berriesPublication . Laranjeira, Cristina; Alves, Marco; Basto De Lima, Maria Gabriela; Henriques, Marília; Orvalho, TelmaOne of the goals was the development of new mustard creams with innovative colours and flavours. Mustard creams are oil-in-water emulsions, but the practice is linked to medieval french vinegar traditions, introduced by the confraternity of Maîtres Vinaigrier-Moutardier. In the classic process, mustard grains are matured by immersion in vinegar; the phenomenon combines acid and enzymatic actions and solid-liquid extraction to mild the bitter/pungent taste. Thus, applying this ancestral practice, mustard (seeds, fragments, powder) was first submitted to maturation studies.
- Reaction forces and bone maturation in taekwondo: comparison of practice with and without TatamiPublication . Rocha, Fernando; Conceição, Ana; Branco, Marco A. C.; Narciso, Janine; Mata, Carlos; Louro, HugoPurpose. Exercise performed improperly, in disagreement with age and development, may trigger negative bioactive effects. Adolescent taekwondo athletes, being able to practise on tatami or without tatami and barefoot, may be submitted to musculoskeletal structure disorders. the purpose of this study was to describe the frequency and amplitude of the reactive forces during taekwondo practice with and without tatami. Methods. Overall, 27 adolescent taekwondo athletes aged 10–15 years were submitted to a standard 90-minute training session with and without tatami. During each session, the frequency of ground contacts and the vertical ground reaction forces were measured. Femur and wrist bone age and the respective stages of the epiphyseal plate were computed from radiograph images. A total of 6346.6 ± 425.5 ground contacts (an average of 106 contacts per minute) were registered during the training session. the Wilcoxon test was applied to analyse the relationship between taekwondo and epiphyseal plate stage (p 0.005). Results. Student’s t-test revealed a significant difference between ground reaction forces with and without tatami; tasks performed without tatami featured smaller magnitudes for comparisons of absolute and normalized values (t = –3.359; p < 0.002 and t = –3.652; p < 0.001, respectively). the time of practice showed no early closure of the femur epiphyseal plates caused by the practice of taekwondo. Conclusions. Practising taekwondo seems to have a bio-positive effect on the maturation of adolescent athletes, regardless of the use of tatami.
- The situational motivation scale in the exercise context: Construct validity, factor structure, and correlational analysisPublication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Cid, Luis; Faustino, Tânia; Monteiro, DiogoThe purpose of this study was to: a) translate and adapt the Situational Motivational Scale (SIMS) in a sample of Portuguese exercisers and examine the factor structure of the scale; and b) evaluate discriminant validity and internal consistency of the factors, as a way to determine multidimensionality. Additionally, we sought to determine the correlational validity of the scale by examining exerciser motivation on enjoyment and exercise participation. Participants were 264 Portuguese exercisers (female = 157) aged between 18 and 69 years, with a mean exercise experience of 5.73 years. Exercisers completed a multi-section survey assessing their situational motivation towards exercising. Several model specifications were tested, namely confirmatory and exploratory factor models. The results of this research support all three hypotheses: (i) that the translation and item adaptation were done correctly, and that the measurement model showed acceptable fit to the data; (ii) the discriminant validity of the factors as well as acceptable internal consistency; and (iii) the correlational validity of exercisers’ motivation with enjoyment and exercise frequency.
- Will next match location influence external and internal training load of a top-class elite professional european soccer team?Publication . Oliveira, Rafael; Brito, João; Loureiro, Nuno; Padinha, Vítor; Nobari, Hadi; Mendes, BrunoBackground: The purpose of this study is to compare training load (TL) preceding a home versus away match in a top-class elite European team during the 2015–2016 season. Methods: Twenty elite outfield soccer players with a mean ± SD age, height and body mass of 25.9 ± 4.6 years, 183.1 ± 6.6 cm and 78.6 ± 6.6 kg, respectively, participated in this study. Total distance covered, highspeed running distance (HSRD), average speed (AvS), rating of perceived exertion (RPE) multiplied by training duration (s-RPE) and Hooper index (HI) were collected. Data from 24 weeks were analyzed through match-day minus/plus approach (MD-5, -4, -3, -2, -1, MD + 1). Results: All external TL variables indicated a decrease from MD-5 until MD-1 and then an increase to MD + 1 (p < 0.01). HI decreased from MD-5 to MD-1, but s-RPE increased until MD-3 and then decreased until MD + 1. When comparing TL data that preceded home matches versus away matches, for MD-5, HSRD and muscle soreness exhibited higher values when away match neared (p < 0.05). For MD-4 and MD-3, total distance, HSRD and AvS exhibited higher values closer to an away match than a home match (p < 0.05). For MD-1, total distances covered were higher closer to a home match than an away match (p < 0.01). For MD + 1, all HI items and AvS were higher when an away match was played (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study confirms and provides evidence regarding the influence on internal and external TL data preceding home and away matches from a team that played in European competitions
- AgetEm - Prototyping of a new spirit vinegarPublication . Laranjeira, Cristina; Alves, Marco; Mira, Helena; Basto de Lima, Maria Gabriela; Canas, Sara; Caldeira, IldaAgrio line of the AgetEm project (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-023583) aimed to develop new vinegar products, benefiting from the location of ESAS in Ribatejo, close to the main Portuguese vinegar industries. An innovative spirit vinegar prototype was developed (2017- 2019), by acetification of a monovarietal white wine distillate, produced from Talia grapes of the National Ampelographic Collection (Portugal). In the EU, “vinegar” is obtained exclusively by double alcoholic and acetic fermentation of substances of agricultural origin (EN 13188: 2000); however, it may include a distillation operation, as in alcohol vinegar or in distilled malt vinegar. Vinegar industry is a classic example of sustainability in the use of raw materials, positioning itself at the end of the agri-food transformation line.
