- Could tDCS Be a Potential Performance-Enhancing Tool for Acute Neurocognitive Modulation in eSports? A Perspective ReviewPublication . Machado, Sergio; Travassos, Bruno; Teixeira, Diogo; Rodrigues, Filipe; Filipe Cid Serra, Luis; Monteiro, DiogoCompetitive sports involve physical and cognitive skills. In traditional sports, there is a greater dependence on the development and performance of both motor and cognitive skills, unlike electronic sports (eSports), which depend much more on neurocognitive skills for success. However, little is known about neurocognitive functions and effective strategies designed to develop and optimize neurocognitive performance in eSports athletes. One such strategy is transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), characterized as a weak electric current applied on the scalp to induce prolonged changes in cortical excitability. Therefore, our objective is to propose anodal (a)-tDCS as a performance-enhancing tool for neurocognitive functions in eSports. In this manuscript, we discussed the neurocognitive processes that underlie exceptionally skilled performances in eSports and how tDCS could be used for acute modulation of these processes in eSports. Based on the results from tDCS studies in healthy people, professional athletes, and video game players, it seems that tDCS is applied over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) as a potential performance-enhancing tool for neurocognition in eSports.
- Differences between Portuguese and Brazilian Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Exploring the Associations across Age, Time of Diagnosis, and Fatigue-Related SymptomsPublication . Alvarez, Marcos C.; Albuquerque, Maria Luiza L.; Neiva, Henrique P.; Cid, Luis; Rodrigues, Filipe; Teixeira, Diogo S.; Monteiro, DiogoThe aim of the study was to explore the differences between Brazilian and Portuguese patients with fibromyalgia (FM) syndrome in their experience of fatigue, and to measure differences in the perception of fatigue as a function of age and duration of the diagnosis. In total, 209 Portuguese women aged between 21 and 75 years (M = 47.44; SD = 10.73) and 429 Brazilian women aged between 18 and 77 years (M = 46.51; SD = 9.24) were recruited to participate in the present study. Participants completed the Multidimensional Daily Diary of Fatigue-Fibromyalgia-17 items (MDF-Fibro-17), a specific tool to measure the level of five components of FM-related fatigue. Results showed greater perception of all the components of fatigue in the Brazilian sample. No significant differences were found related to age and duration of FM diagnosis. The multifaceted nature of FM and cultural differences suggests that individualized treatment programs may be necessary to reduce fatigue-related symptoms in patients with this syndrome.
- Home-Advantage during COVID-19: An Analysis in Portuguese Football LeaguePublication . Matos, Rui; Monteiro, Diogo; Antunes, Raul; Mendes, Diogo; Botas, João; Clemente, João; Amaro, NunoCovid-19 pandemic forced, at the final rounds of 2019–2020 season, in many different sports leagues worldwide, teams to play without an audience. Therefore, the present paper aims to compare the home advantage score in the last ten rounds in the 2019–2020 season with the first 24 rounds in the same season using Pollard’s (1986) and Matos et al.’s (2020) methods. In addition, comparisons across different seasons (2016–2017; 2017–2018; 2018–2019 and 2019–2020) using the same methods were also analyzed. Results showed no differences (p > 0.05) between first 24 rounds and the last 10 in 2019–2020 season as well as in the 3 previous seasons. With Pollard’s method, no differences (p > 0.05) were also found among those four seasons on global (all 34 rounds) home advantage. However, a significance difference between 2017–2018 and 2019–2020 (p < 0.05) was founded using Matos et al.’s (2020) method, which is an indicator of the importance of using complementary methods when analyzing the same realities. Overall, despite what might be expectable from recent findings, the lack of an audience in the last 10 rounds of Portuguese Football League 2019–2020 season, due to COVID-19 pandemic, did not affect home advantage. Therefore, future studies could try to analyze other different variables in Portuguese Football League, such as referees’ behaviors, rules changing (e.g., the possibility of making five substitutions, instead of three), crowd dimension and density as well as include variables about odds as forecasts in football being played without crowds.
- Preference for and tolerance of the intensity of exercise questionnaire (PRETIE-Q): validity, reliability and gender invariance in Portuguese health club exercisersPublication . Teixeira, D. S.; Ekkekakis, P.; Andrade, A.; Rodrigues, Filipe; Evmenenko, A.; Faria, J.; Marques, P.; Cid, Luis; Monteiro, DiogoThe aim of the present study was to translate and adapt the Preference for and Tolerance of the Intensity of Exercise Questionnaire to Portuguese (PRETIE-Q-PT), and to analyze its psychometric properties (factorial validity with gender invariance analyses, reliability, temporal stability, and construct validity). The sample was composed of 445 Portuguese participants (55.9%women), with a mean age of 29.6 years (SD = 8.2). To verify the psychometric properties of the scale, structural equation modeling procedures were used. Results showed that an abbreviated 10-item scale presented good fit, reliability, and convergent validity. Latent mean analysis between samples, sex, and time points showed no differences. Construct validity tested with self-reported exercise frequency, vitality, well-being, and habit supported the use of the PRETIE-Q-PT in exercise settings, highlighting the need for exercise professionals to consider these intensity-related trait variables in the promotion of a pleasant exercise experience. As a general conclusion, the PRETIE-Q-PT seems to be a valid scale that can be used to assess intensity-trait characteristics in health club exercisers, and may allow professionals to better adjust exercise prescription to subjective needs aiming to achieve theoretically suggested promotion of pleasurable exercise experiences.
- Passion, grit, and mindset in undergraduate sport sciences studentsPublication . Frontini, R.; Sigmundsson, Hermundur; Antunes, Raul; Silva, Ana Filipa; Lima, Ricardo; Clemente, Filipe ManuelThe aim of this study was two-fold: (i) to compare passion, grit and mindset between sexes; and (ii) to analyze the relationships between passion, grit and mindset. Fifty-eight men (age: 20.10 ± 2.70 years old) and forty-eight women (age: 19.27 ± 4.10 years old) sports sciences undergraduate students voluntarily participated in this study. A cross-sectional survey design was followed. The passion scale, grit scale and mindset scale were provided to participants. Comparisons in the passion, grit and mindset items revealed no significant differences between sexes (p > 0.05). Relationships between passion, grit and mindset were tested. Overall (both sexes considered), correlations presented small magnitudes in the pair's passion*grit (r = 0.28; 95%CI [-0.07; 0.31]; p = 0.004), passion*mindset (r = 0.203; 95%CI [0.01; 0.38]; p = 0.043) and grit*mindset (r = 0.06; 95%CI [-0.14; 0.25]; p = 0.574). As conclusions, the present study did not find significant differences in passion, grit and mindset between sexes in undergraduate sports sciences students. Additionally, it was verified that relationships between passion, grit and mindset are small in this population.
- Active Commuting: an opportunity to fight Both climate change and physical inactivityPublication . Figueiredo, Nuno; Rodrigues, Filipe; Morouço, Pedro; Monteiro, DiogoGlobal health, climate, and ecological conditions cannot be dissociated, and over the last decade, the impacts of climate change on health have been profoundly felt. In 2010, the transport sector has been responsible for the direct emission of 6.7 Gt of carbon dioxide (CO2), and these numbers are expected to double by 2050. Additionally, physical inactivity rates have been growing over the last years, with most individuals in developed countries still relying on their cars for daily transportation, despite the unexplored potential of daily commuting in the promotion of physical activity. Given the well-known link between chronic diseases and sedentary lifestyles, addressing both the upward tendency of public health costs and energy consumption obtained from fossil fuels can be, possibly, one of the greatest public health opportunities over the last century. In this paper, we explore the potential of active commuting as a contemporary approach to address both global issues, considering its benefits on several indicators of health, quality of life, and well-being, as well as environmental-friendly behaviors
