- Análise comportamental da prática de exercício físico em adultos em contexto de ginásio ao longo de dois anosPublication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Macedo, Rita; Teixeira, Diogo; Cid, Luis; Monteiro, DiogoO objetivo deste estudo consistiu em analisar o comportamento dos praticantes de exercício físico ao longo de dois anos, considerando a sua frequência como preditor da frequência futura. Participaram neste estudo 4788 novos praticantes de exercício físico (feminino = 2556) com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e 75 anos. Os acessos aos ginásios e health clubs foi recolhida com recurso aos sistemas eletrónicos dos ginásios. Os dados foram analisados com o recurso a um modelo de equações estruturais e um modelo de mediação em série. Relativamente à taxa de abandono e posteriormente exclusão da análise: 39% abandonaram a prática de exercício físico entre os primeiros seis meses (T1) e os seis meses seguintes (T2); 25% desistiu da prática entre T2 e os seis meses após um ano de prática regular (T3); e 10% abandonaram entre T3 e os seis meses após um ano e meio de prática regular (T4). De acordo com os resultados do modelo de equações estruturais, foram encontrados diversos efeitos diretos e indiretos significativos, sugerindo assim que T2 e T3 poderão ser mediadores entre o T1 e T4. De acordo com os resultados do modelo de mediação é possível observar que o efeito direto não é significativo. Os resultados mostram a existência de mediação total entre o período T1 → T4, dado o efeito indireto total ser significativo e superior ao efeito direto. Os indivíduos que praticam exercício físico pelo menos duas vezes por semana sem interrupção foram aqueles que demonstraram maior probabilidades em se manterem na prática após os dois anos de acompanhamento do comportamento.
- Assessing Need Satisfaction and Frustration in Portuguese Exercise Instructors: scale validity, reliability and invariance between genderPublication . Methods: Data from 477 exercise professionals (319 males, 158 females) was collected.Results: CFA supported the adapted and validated six-factor model: [χ2(237) = 1096.796, χ2/df= 4.63; B-S p < .001, CFI = .930, TLI = .918, SRMR= .0366, RMSEA = .079 (CI90% = .069, .089)], assessing satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological needs in Portuguese exercise professionals. Moreover, the analysis revealed acceptable composite reliability, and construct validity of the adapted version. Results revealed nomological validity, as well as invariance between male and female. No differences were found across latent means, and magnitude effects were trivial between gender. Conclusion: These results support the use of the adapted scale in exercise professionals, showing measurement invariance between gender. This scale is able to measure how exercise professionals experience satisfaction and frustration of basic needs when prescribing exercise to individuals in fitness context.
- Assessing the relationship between autonomy support and student group cohesion across Ibero-American countriesPublication . The objective of this paper was twofold. First, this study sought to test a model in which student-perceived autonomy support was associated with group cohesion, considering the mediating role of basic psychological needs satisfaction and intrinsic motivation. Second, the current study examined the dimensionality of the model across five Western countries, namely Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. A convenience sample of 3033 college students (Mage = 21.51 ± SD = 3.71) were recruited for the analysis. The results revealed that perceived autonomy support was positively associated with needs satisfaction, being consequently associated with intrinsic motivation and, ultimately, with group cohesion. Additionally, a multigroup analysis revealed that the model was invariant across college students from the different countries. The current results are discussed around the promotion of teacher uses of autonomy-supportive behaviors fostering adaptive outcomes in students regarding positive social relations and that the cultures of Ibero-American countries are equivalent in this process.
- A avaliação do hábito em praticantes de exercício físico: testando a validade do self-report behavioral automaticity indexPublication . A medição precisa do hábito é crucial para ajudar os investigadores a desenvolver e aplicar um modelo teórico sobre o hábito, com uma medida empiricamente válida. Desta forma, o objetivo do presente estudo foi testar a validade e a fiabilidade do Self-Report Behavior Automaticity Index numa amostra Portuguesa praticante de exercício físico. Foram recolhidos dados de duas amostras independentes, com um total de 590 adultos (mulheres= 311; homens= 279). Realizou-se uma análise fatorial confirmatória do modelo de medida de quatro itens do Self-Report Behavior Automaticity Index e uma análise de invariância entre duas amostras independentes. Adicionalmente, foi testado um modelo de mediação de forma a analisar o papel mediador da frequência semanal de exercício físico entre a experiência passada e o hábito. O modelo de medida do Self-Report Behavior Automaticity Index demonstrou um ajustamento aceitável em cada uma das amostras e os coeficientes de fiabilidade compósita foram adequados. O modelo de medida revelou ser invariante entre amostras, acrescentando, por isso um maior suporte à sua validade para avaliar o comportamento habitual. - Behavioral Regulation Sport Questionnaire: Gender and Sport Invariance in Portuguese AthletesPublication . Monteiro, Diogo; Teixeira, Diogo; Vitorino, Anabela; Moutão, João; Rodrigues, Filipe; Machado, Sérgio; Cid, LuisThis study aimed to analyze measurement invariance of the Behavioral Regulation Sports Questionnaire (BRSQ) across the gender and four different sports. In addition, we examined nomological validity via basic psychological needs satisfaction. Participants totaled 1,812 Portuguese athletes (1,220 males and 592 females; aged 15–59 years, Mage ¼ 17.72, SD ¼ 5.51) from football (n ¼ 596), basketball (n ¼ 273), swimming (n ¼ 800), and parasport (n ¼ 143). The BRSQ measurement model was invariant across the gender and these four sports. The scale confirmed nomological validity in that satisfaction of the basic psychological needs positively predicted autonomous forms of motivation and negatively predicted more controlled motivation and amotivation as suggested by self-determination theory. In light of this evidence for BRSQ construct validity, composite reliability, nomological validity, and invariance across the gender and four different sports, this scale is a useful tool for the coaches of the aforementioned sports in their efforts to evaluate their athletes’ motivation.
- Can Interpersonal Behavior Influence the Persistence and Adherence to Physical Exercise Practice in Adults? A Systematic ReviewPublication . Self-Determination Theory (SDT) argues that social environment plays a central role in the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, which might directly affect the quality of one’s motivation. Individuals who appear to be more self-determined tend to persist longer at certain behaviors. Therefore, this body of work intends to analyze the relationship between motivational variables and behavioral outcomes in the exercise context, having as theoretical background the Self-Determination Theory. Methods: This systematic review was conducted through an electronic search on Web of Science, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and PsycINFO. Data such as instruments, main predictors and results were collected from studies published between 1985 and 2018. A total of 35 empirical studies were considered for a detailed analysis. Results: Results showed the relevance of autonomy support performed by exercise professionals, as well as the major contribution that these behaviors have toward the satisfaction of basic psychological needs, besides the inherent benefits of developing more autonomous regulations. According to the literature, few studies have analyzed interpersonal thwarting behavior and the way this relates to basic psychological needs’ frustration. Nether less, there seems to be a negative relationship between less self-determined regulations and exercise practice. Conclusion: Despite the existence of numerous cross-sectional studies that demonstrate positive correlations between SDT and behavioral outcomes in the exercise context, longitudinal research that analyzes all six dimensions of interpersonal behaviors and their relationship with persistence and adherence to exercise proves to be crucial. However, according to this review, interventions based on SDT appear to be fundamental when it comes to promote the maintenance of a long-term exercise practice.
- Could tDCS Be a Potential Performance-Enhancing Tool for Acute Neurocognitive Modulation in eSports? A Perspective ReviewPublication . In traditional sports, there is a greater dependence on the development and performance of both motor and cognitive skills, unlike electronic sports (eSports), which depend much more on neurocognitive skills for success. However, little is known about neurocognitive functions and effective strategies designed to develop and optimize neurocognitive performance in eSports athletes. One such strategy is transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), characterized as a weak electric current applied on the scalp to induce prolonged changes in cortical excitability. Therefore, our objective is to propose anodal (a)-tDCS as a performance-enhancing tool for neurocognitive functions in eSports. In this manuscript, we discussed the neurocognitive processes that underlie exceptionally skilled performances in eSports and how tDCS could be used for acute modulation of these processes in eSports. Based on the results from tDCS studies in healthy people, professional athletes, and video game players, it seems that tDCS is applied over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) as a potential performance-enhancing tool for neurocognition in eSports.

The first case of COVID-19 was diagnosed on December 8, 2019, in Hubei province, China. From that day, in just over 3 months, the virus has spread to more than 177 countries/areas/territories around the world, with more than 266,073 confirmed cases and 11,184 deaths, according to WHO on March 21, 2020 (WHO, 2020). The most common clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are mild flu-like illness, potentially lethal acute respiratory distress syndrome, or fulminant pneumonia. As a result, numerous countries have decided to implement (some by government decrees, as well as martial laws) the establishment of mandatory social distance in a family environment, closing non-essential commercial environments, in an attempt to reduce the peak of the infection curve (Lewnard and Lo, 2020). We know that a large part of the world population is far from the minimum conditions of physical exercise recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) to improve the health component (Katzmarzyk et al., 2019). This fact would give important relevance to the level of physical activity exercised by the population throughout the day.However, once the extreme hypokinetic behavior is implemented as a result of the quarantine, a cycle of perverse events begins, making part of the population more vulnerable to the deleterious effects of acute and chronic diseases, including respiratory tract infections (Hall et al., 2020). In a recent position paper presented by Chen et al. (2020), the authors try to propose to the general population to continue exercising regardless of the current moment the world is living. In fact, as the authors mention, based on other researchers, “anything is better than nothing,” and the sedentary lifestyle is something that should not be encouraged, i.e., any energy expenditure added to the routine of these people would be significant. Recommendations for the population to keep regularly active highlight only a minimum applicable technical basis, without presenting any suitable parameters for carrying them out. From the initial positioning of Chen et al. (2020), the ACSM via publication on the website of the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (ACSM, 2020; WHO, 2020), as well as other institutions (ACSM, 2020; WHO, 2020), expanded the proposal about the practice of physical exercise to be performed at home. Tasks such as brisk walking, up and down stairs, dance, jump rope, yoga exercises, and bodyweight strength training are also recommended for indoor workout (Table 1).
- Ensinar o treinador a ser um treinador de futebol: Uma abordagem teórica com implicações práticas.Publication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Rita, Rita; Cid, Luis; Teixeira, Diogo; Monteiro, DiogoThis study aimed at analyzing the effect of the motivational climate induced by coaches in young athletes’ effort perception, through a hybrid model, developed based on the Achievement Goal Theory and the SelfDetermination Theory. Data from 803 male athletes aged between 14 and 20 years (M=17.60; SD=2.21), with a weekly training frequency between 2 to 6 times a week (M=3.56; SD=.85) and workout duration between 60 to 300 minutes (M=99.75; SD=21.08) was analyzed. Participants completed four questionnaires previously translated and validated for Portuguese in the context of sport. Goodness-of-fit indexes of the measurement model and the structural model showed acceptable fit. All regressions proved to be significant, taking into account theoretical assumptions. The indirect effects show that the task-oriented climate positively predicts the perceived effort, both through autonomous motivation and through controlled motivation. Conversely, ego-oriented climates had a negative and significant indirect effect on perceived effort, regardless of the motivational regulation. In practical terms, young athletes’ coaches should focus on the learning process and on developing new skills among the athletes, value progress and effort, individually and as a team, and creating a balanced and harmonious engagement between athletes.
- Estudo observacional do golo no futebol: deteção de padrões temporaisPublication . A amostra é constituída por 54 golos marcados na Liga Espanho‑ la, que foram codificados pelo Sistema de Observação do Golo no Futebol. O tratamento dos dados foi realizado utilizando o THEME® 5.0. Foram detetados T‑patterns em situações de rápida transição defesa‑ataque e esquemas táticos. A análise realizada permite a recolha de informações importantes para os treinadores que podem ser utilizadas na planificação do treino e da competição
