- NEETin with ICTPublication . Barbas, Maria Potes; Branco, Paulo; Loureiro, Ana; Matos, PedroScience and Technology Advisory Council (STAC) outlines that 49% of EU citizens identified “job creation” and 33% identified “education and skills” as the top priorities for science and technology innovation over the next fifteen years. Both documents justify the needs in Europe for the ICT field especially for the NEET (not in education, employment or training) citizens. On the other hand, Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs (GC4DJ) in Europe identifies: the training and matching digital jobs; certification; innovative learning and teaching; mobility; awareness raising; increasing effectiveness of education; increasing equity and producing positive impact in the economy, as a priority for European countries. NEETin is a project directed to NEET citizens, to be developed by Higher Education Institutions, VET providers and Enterprises in order to help to overcome a social European dimension through lifelong learning. By creating a Joint Vocational Education Training in Digital Competences in a collaboration between VET providers and the Enterprises, widening the access to higher education, in an innovative student-centred learning model to apply in a European level, we aim to contribute to improve the quality of Education. Through this certified JVET, NEET citizens will develop their digital skills and the success of employability of these learners will be enhanced.
- A SMART Platform for Mail ManagementPublication . Raminhos, Ricardo; Coutinho, Eduardo; Miranda, Nuno; Barbas, Maria Potes; Branco, Paulo; Gonçalves, Teresa; Palma, GilEmail is a key communication format in a digital world, both for professional and/or personal usage. Exchanged messages (both human and automatically generated) have reached such a volume that processing them can be a great challenge for human users that try to do it on a daily basis and in an efficient manner. In fact, a significant amount of their time is spent searching and getting context information (normally historic information) in order to prepare a reply message or to take a decision/action, when compared to the actual time required for writing a reply. Therefore, it is of utmost importance for this process to use both automatic and semi-automatic mechanisms that allow to put email messages into context. Since context information is given, not only by historical email messages but also inferred from the relationship between contacts and/or organizations present in the messages, the existence of navigation mechanisms (and even exploration ones) between contacts and entities associated to email messages, is of fundamental importance. This is the main purpose of the SMART Mail prototype, which architecture, data visualization and exploration components and AI algorithms, are presented throughout this paper.
- UPTAKE ICT - An erasmus+ project for digital inclusionPublication . Barbas, Maria Potes; Branco, Paulo; Dias, Isabel; Casimiro, Elsa; Ronsivalle, Gaetano; Costa, Cristina; Cortoni, Ida; Preisinger-Kleine, RandolphDespite the growth in the use of Internet worldwide, there is still a large amount of people that never used it, even in European countries like Portugal and Italy with 33% and 35% citizens that never used respectively. This project aims to address this problem by engaging synergies of nine partners in four countries (Portugal, Italy, United Kingdom and Germany) whose good practices will be shared and validated by the Science and Technology Foundation in Portugal. This network will work both at local, regional, national and international levels in transversal and trans-sectorial areas, both in terms of the partners involved (academic and enterprise), and in terms of the focus group (Vocational education and training; adult and elderly education with special focus on disadvantaged background citizens) literacy inclusion, re-qualification and employability. The main focus is to attend the info-excluded citizen, mainly the ones with disadvantaged backgrounds, both in social and geographical terms by integrating the ICTs in their lives and to share and spread those good practices either among partners and with the community. To include and train these citizens in Information and communications technologies, educational content was developed in various formats and in three levels of difficulty, hoping to respect the individual way of learning.
