Abstract(s)
Tobacco consumption and involuntary exposure to its smoke constitute the most important preventable problem in public health. It is also the most significant individual and social risk factor for the health of women of reproductive age and, during pregnancy, the leading preventable cause of complications for both the mother and the fetus and newborn. Recognizing the need for research development in this domain, in Portugal, the availability of instruments that enable it is considered an asset. The instrument Smoke-Free Families (Melvin et al, 2000) appears in the literature as one of the most used in characterizing tobacco consumption throughout the pregnancy-postpartum cycle. Following the methodology proposed by Sousa & Rojjanasrirat (2011), the Smoke-Free Families instrument was translated, adapted, and validated for Portugal, making it available for future research, in this domain, in our country (Study I). To confirm its validity, in a practical research context, the portuguese version of the Smoke-Free Families instrument was used in a study characterizing a sample of pregnant and postpartum women, regarding their smoking habits (Study II). It was found that the instrument allowed for this characterization. The data obtained indicated that pregnancy positively influenced the smoking consumption/cessation patterns of some of these women and suggested an increased likelihood of relapse in the postpartum period. There was also a significant level of acceptance regarding tobacco consumption, particularly outside the context of pregnancy. All this work was developed within the Mum2You project
