Abstract(s)
This report is part of the Master’s Degree in Preschool Education at the Escola Superior de Educação de Santarém and is divided into two parts. The first part describes and reflects on the teaching practices supervised in the nursery and kindergarten contexts. The second part concerns the research component, which aims to understand the effect of unstructured activities on play, using loose and waste materials, in a preschool room with children aged between 3 and 4. This is a non-experimental, mixed descriptive, longitudinal study, with three moments of data collection, involving direct observations, analysis of play and social behaviors, and an interview on the subject with the cooperating teacher. In the course of the teaching practices, reflections were made on structured and unstructured activities with various materials, which culminating in the interest of analyzing the potential and limitations of loose materials (natural materials and human/manufactured materials) in children’s play, in the context of unstructured activities, and their potential impact on the dynamics of social interactions between children in the same room. Throughout the three sessions, the children explored different types of social and individual play, evolving in their interactions with each other. It was found that the loose materials in the context of unstructured activity enhance the development of with a stabilization in the third session. The potential and limitations of this pedagogical strategy are discussed.
