Abstract Decision making is inherent in a response selection, which indicates an adaptive behavior based on the ability to solve problems (Tenenbaum, 2003). This study, which focuses on the theme of the coach’s decision making process, attempted to develop an area rarely conceptualized, using the study of Guia (2009) as a basis, where the influence of meta-decision constraints on the coaches’ decisions were analysed. The primary objective of this research, which is subdivided in two studies, was to evaluate the influence of meta-decision constraints on the decision making of football coaches (Study I) through the training of decision-making skills. The second study (Study II) aimed to analyse the temporal efficiency of the decision-making skills training program. This research involved 12 football coaches from various competitive levels, randomly distributed into two groups (experimental and control). The experimental group participated in four decision-making skills training sessions, while the control group was not the subject of any intervention and these coaches developed their technical activities both in training and in competition. The results obtained in Study I, both in the pre-test and post-test 1, despite not being significant, demonstrated that the decision-making skills training promoted an improvement in the coach’s decision-making capabilities both in the time spent as well as in the decision-making accuracy. For the second part of the study, in post-test 1 and posttest 2, the results reflect the positive retention and improvement of skills promoted by the decision-making skills training in the experimental group. This investigation shows a trend that supports the retention of skills promoted by THD. The maintaining of the acquired skills reveals the influence of training metadecisional behavioral changes in medium term. However it is important to investigate the applicability/ transferability of the skills acquired in the context of training for competition.
