Abstract(s)
This applied project, situated within the fields of Education Sciences and Educational Administration, aims to explore the role of the Social Action Services (SAS) at a Polytechnic Institution of Higher Education (IESP), with a focus on supporting international students, particularly those from Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP). A situational diagnosis was conducted through mixed-method research that combines qualitative, quantitative, and exploratory approaches. The study identifies the main areas of support offered by the SAS, evaluates their characteristics and effectiveness, and analyzes the strategies used for welcoming students. Furthermore, it examines the relationship between these welcoming actions and students' perceptions. The methodology involves a review of specific literature, analysis of legal regulations, and data analysis from questionnaires administered to twenty-two students, in addition to an interview with the Senior Social Service Technician and Coordinator of the housing sector. The results reveal the perceptions of those involved and allow for the formulation of recommendations and suggestions for improvement in areas with the greatest disparities. It is important to emphasize that the SAS aims to support students' cultural adaptation to the new academic environment, promote the development of social skills, and contribute to academic success. They provide comprehensive support, including psychological, medical, and career guidance services. However, it was found that not all student needs are fully met. Although most students report satisfaction with the services offered, significant challenges were identified regarding cultural adaptation and the perception of curriculum content. These issues highlight areas where SAS can enhance their support and welcoming efforts to better meet the needs of international students from PALOP. This work specifically sought to identify and propose improvements for future implementation.
