Abstract By adding an entertaining component to The Primary School’s National Programme, the teacher has the opportunity to develop the student’s participation in class. This involvement can reflect in their learning. During the school year 2009 / 2010, the aim was to plan all the Physical Education lessons, for a primary school class in the county of Alcobaça. These lesson plans were based on games and fun activities, while simultaneously taking into account The Primary School’s National Programme. Targeting a second grade class, a study was also conducted on the influence of the entertaining component on the Physical Education lessons. This study was based on the evaluation charts of 2008 / 2009 compared to those of 2009 / 2010, because in one of the school years the approach was exclusively entertaining, while in the other the approach was not exclusively entertaining and many contents were dealt with by means of analytical activities. This comparison allows us to verify if the entertaining component influences the student’s learning, as well as their interest in class activities. This study permitted the conclusion that in 2009 /2010 the students obtained better results and maintained better attitudes. During the Physical Education classes the students carried out the tasks in a more spontaneous manner due to their fun aspects. This made them enjoy and appreciate Physical Education more, which is extremely important for a healthier future. Considering that Physical Education in the Portuguese primary schools is recent, this document may be used by Physical Education teachers, as well as for future studies.
