- Examining exercise motives between gender, age and activity: a first-order scale analysis and measurement invariancePublication . Rodrigues, Filipe; MOUTÃO, JOÃO; Teixeira, Diogo; Cid, Luis; Monteiro, DiogoConceptualizing an exercise program according to exercisers motives seems to be crucial. Thus, adequate and validated scale assessing motives for physical activity is necessary. This study aimed to translate and validate the Exercise Motives Inventory – 2 (EMI-2), a scale assessing fourteen motives for regular physical activity in Portuguese exercisers. In addition, comparison of motives between groups were made according to gender, age, and fitness activity. For scale validation, data from two independent samples were collected: calibration (n = 820; female = 499) and validation (n = 733; female = 451) participants. For scale reliability and mean difference analysis, data from a new sample was collected (n = 515; female = 342). Results showed that data did not fit the original 51-item model. After reviewing item loadings, two items were eliminated, since they presented factor loadings below acceptable. Hence, the revised model encompassing 49-item had an adequate fit. Convergent and discriminant validity was achieved in the revised model, displaying acceptable construct validity. In addition, invariance criteria were respected between female and male Portuguese exercisers. Regarding mean comparison analysis, differences were found between gender, and across age and fitness activities. Nevertheless, in overall the majority of exercisers indicated “general health” and “physiological” motives as the most valued. The EMI-2 is a reliable scale assessing motives in Portuguese exercisers. This study suggests that exercise programs should be conceptualized considering motives, but also gender, age, and fitness activity.
- Understanding motivational climates in physical education classes: how students perceive learning and performance-oriented climates by teachers and peersPublication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Monteiro, Diogo; Teixeira, Diogo; Cid, LuisThis study aimed to translate and validate the Learning and Performance Oriented in Physical Education Climate Questionnaire (LAPOPECQ) in a sample of Portuguese students. Additionally, this study examined if the measurement would be equivalent across samples and gender. For nomological validity, current study examined the relationships of motivational climates oriented by teachers and peers and behavioral regulations in the physical education context. Data from 536 Portuguese students (female = 256) aged 10 and 18 years (M = 13.33; SD = .47) were collected. Participants were involved in regular physical education classes two times per week, according to the Portuguese educational system. The four-correlated factor confirmatory and exploratory model provided acceptable fit to the data. In addition, multigroup analysis showed invariance among groups, namely between calibration and validation samples, and female and male students. Last, significant correlations were found between motivational climates and behavioral regulations as theoretically proposed, confirming nomological validity. The translated LAPOPECQ into Portuguese is a valid instrument assessing students’ perception of motivational climates oriented by teachers and peers.

- The multidimensional daily diary of fatigue-fibromyalgia-17 Items (MDF-Fibro-17): evidence from validity, reliability and transcultural invariance between Portugal and BrazilPublication . Álvarez, Marcos C.; Albuquerque, Maria Luiza L.; Neiva, Henrique P.; Cid, Luis; Teixeira, Diogo S.; Rodrigues, Filipe; Monteiro, DiogoThe Multidimensional Daily Diary of Fatigue-Fibromyalgia-17 (MDF-fibro-17) is an instrument that measures the different components of fibromyalgia-related fatigue symptoms. The current study aims to examine the factor structure of the MDF-fibro-17 in a sample of Portuguese and Brazilian patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Additionally, a cross-cultural analysis was carried out on these samples to understand the multidimensional complexity of examining the different dimensions of fatigue in patients with different cultural backgrounds and how fibromyalgia impacts patients with this syndrome. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed to examine the psychometric properties of the measure. Additionally, a multigroup analysis was carried out on the samples of these two cultures to examine measurement invariance. In total, 209 Portuguese women aged between 21 and 75 years (M = 47.44; SD = 10.73) and 429 Brazilians women aged between 16 and 77 years (M = 46.51; SD = 9.24) participated in this study. The results revealed that the measurement model provided an acceptable fit to the data in both the Portuguese and Brazilian samples, also displaying acceptable convergent and discriminant validity. In addition, the model showed acceptable internal consistency and was invariant between cultures. In sum, the MDF-fibro-17 is a valid measure that offers a unique assessment of fatigue symptoms in Portuguese and Brazilian women with fibromyalgia.
- The Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale in Exercise (BPNSFS-E): Validity, Reliability, and Gender Invariance in Portuguese ExercisersPublication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Hair, Joseph F.; Neiva, Henrique Pereira; Teixeira, Diogo Santos; Cid, Luis; Monteiro, DiogoThe aim of this study was to translate and validate the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale for Portuguese exercisers. In addition, we sought to analyze gender invariance. We collected data from two independent samples of Portuguese respondents—a calibration sample with 316 participants and a validation sample with 632 participants. Results from confirmatory factor analysis supported the original six-factor model in both the calibration sample, χ2(237) = 471.814, χ2/df = 1.99; B–S p < .001, Comparative Fit Index = .935, Tucker–Lewis Index =.924, standard mean root square residual = .047, root mean square error of approximation = .057 (90% confidence interval = [.050, .065]), and the validation sample, χ2(237) = 571.796, χ2/df = 2.41; B–S p < .001, Comparative Fit Index = .948, Tucker–Lewis Index = .940, standard mean root square residual = .038, root mean square error of approximation = .047 (90% confidence interval = [.042, .052]). Moreover, our analysis revealed acceptable internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validity of the translated version, and invariance between the two samples and between genders, as differences across latent means showed that magnitude effects were trivial between samples and between male and female exercisers. These results support the use of the adapted scale among both male and female exercisers.
- Examining the coach motivation questionnaire in fitness professionals (CMQ-FP): factor structure, invariance, and predictive analysisPublication . Rodrigues, Filipe; Macedo, R.; Mallett, C. J.; Kawabata, M.; Monteiro, DiogoPurpose: To date, most research on the assessment of motivation has been exerciser-focused and has not considered how fitness professionals' motivations impact their behaviors toward exercisers during training sessions. The purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of the Coach Motivation Questionnaire in a sample of fitness professionals (CMQ-FP) to ascertain its usefulness for this vocational grouping. Measurement invariance analysis was conducted between female and male fitness professionals, and predictive validity was tested considering need-supportive and need-thwarting behaviors as outcomes. Methods: Participants were 799 fitness professionals (female = 412) aged between 20 and 56 years (M = 28.71, SD = 3.24), who completed a multi-section survey assessing their motivation toward work and their interpersonal behaviors when engaging with exercisers. Results: The results of this research supported all three hypotheses. First, the hypothesized 6-factor measurement model showed acceptable fit to the data. Second, the factor structure of the CMQ-FP was invariant across gender (male and female fitness professionals). Third, fitness professionals' (autonomous or controlled) motivation was a valid predictor of need-supportive or need-thwarting behaviors. Conclusion: This study supported the factor structure of the CMQ-FP, presenting as a valid measure of motivation in fitness professionals. Understanding fitness professionals' perceptions of their coaching motivation can inform professional development activities to assist fitness professionals to increase understanding of what motivates these professionals and how they might be more need-supportive and less need-thwarting in their pedagogical behaviors.
