| dc.description.abstract | Background: Alzheimer's Disease (AD), Parkinson's Disease (PD), and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are among the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders, affecting millions of people worldwide. These conditions significantly impair functionality and the performance of activities of daily living. However, regular physical exercise has demonstrated relevant benefits in improving motor function, making it a promising intervention for this population. Objective: This dissertation aimed to present the purpose and methodology of three studies: (i) to analyze the current state of knowledge regarding the effects of physical exercise on motor function in older adults with Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease or Multiple Sclerosis; (ii) to develop and validate a physical exercise program tailored for older adults with these conditions; and (iii) to evaluate the effects of Alzheimer's Disease on motor functions. Methods: To address the first objective, a systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. For the second objective, the exercise program was validated according to the recommendations of the CREDECI2 model and the CERT framework. Regarding the third objective, a case study was conducted involving an older woman diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Results: The systematic review identified 125 articles, of which 13 met the inclusion criteria. The evidence showed that structured physical exercise promotes improvements in motor function, balance, mobility, and functional independence, particularly in individuals with PD. Benefits were also observed in older adults with AD, especially through dual-task interventions. The exercise program was considered valid and appropriate by the expert panel. Finally, the case study revealed slight changes in motor function. Furthermore, inertial measurement units (IMUs) and artificial intelligence (AI) were used to train individual monitoring and assessment models. Discussion and Conclusions: It was concluded that physical exercise and physical activity represent a safe and effective strategy for older adults with neurodegenerative diseases, contributing to the improvement of motor function and motor coordination. The results reinforce the importance of further research involving populations with MS and a larger sample size. | eng |
