colaboradores (1988), e através dos percentis segundo o Centers for Disease and Prevention (2000).

In Portugal, the prevalence of obesity is estimated at 13% for males and 15% for females. About 32% of Portuguese children aged 7 to 9 years are overweight, or obese. Recent data confirm that 1/3 of Portuguese children aged 6 to 8 years old are overweight, and 14.6% obese. This study refers to the implementation of a physical exercise program (fitness), which aims to complement existing school programs in the areas of physical activity and physical education, in children. The pattern of physical activity was characterized by means of the questionnaire Quantification de l'Activite Physique en Altitude Chez le Enfants (QAPACE). The physical condition parameters were evaluated by means of a battery of tests Fitnessgram (aerobic fitness tests, muscular fitness, strength and endurance and flexibility). The body composition parameters were evaluated using anthropometric measurements according to the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry, by the percentage of fat mass according Slaughter and his collaborators (1988), and through the second percentile and the Centers for Disease Prevention (2000). Descriptive statistics was used to display and characterize the data collected. The t-test and Wilcoxon pair tests were performed to compare the effects of the program, after six months of intervention. The main results yielded significant differences in the physical condition of children. The results suggest that the program contribute for improving the physical fitness of this school aged boys.
