Ler ou não ler: esta é a questão?

Abstract

Este trabalho analisa o primeiro volume da Coleção As aventuras do Capitão Cueca, objetivando identificar motivos do seu sucesso de público e vendagem. Do ponto de vista sociológico, a história reflete inconsistências entre as mudanças da sociedade e da instituição escolar, bem como a abreviação da infância e a extensão da adolescência. A busca de protagonismo pelos alunos choca-se com a tradição da educação tradicional, tantas vezes “bancária”. Do ponto de vista linguístico, busca-se explicar os erros ortográficos intencionais, bem como identificar a metáfora conceptual e a recorrência de verbos de ação utilizados na construção dos personagens. Conclui-se que a heterodoxia dos recursos gráficos e do enredo atrai os leitores, aos quais se reserva papel ativo e crítico na leitura, despertando o seu desejo pela leitura. - To read or not to read: is that really the question? This paper analyzes the Brazilian version of The Adventures of Captain Underpants (first volume), attempting to identify the reasons for its sales success. From the sociological standpoint, the story mirrors inconsistencies between social changes and changes in schooling, as well as the curtailment of childhood and the corresponding expansion of adolescence. Pupils’ expectations of a protagonist role in the educational process clash with traditional contents transmission-type schooling. From the linguistic perspective, this work suggests explanations for the intentional use of spelling errors, and identifies conceptual metaphors and the recurrent use of action verbs in constructing characters. It concludes that the innovative graphic resources and plot attract readers who are attributed an active, critical role in the reading process thereby stimulating their appetite for reading.
